Democratising MRI: Maximising Impact in Low-Resource Settings
Other
Monday, 06 May 2024
Room 325-326
08:15 -  10:15
Moderators: Ernesta Meintjes & Godwin Ogbole
Session Number: M-SS

OVERVIEW
This special session brings together four distinct presentations to shed light on the advancement and implementation of imaging technology in resource-constrained regions. From establishing radiology programs, through training future leaders, to ensuring sustainable solutions, the presentations underscore the importance of global partnerships in addressing unique challenges and fostering impactful change.

TARGET AUDIENCE
All ISMRM members who would like to learn about the challenges and be involved in improving the accessibility of MRI.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
• Explain the process and challenges involved in establishing a radiology residency program in resource-constrained regions, including the pivotal role of partnerships and knowledge exchange between low and high resource settings;
• Describe the ISMRT Future Leaders Initiative and its impact on enhancing radiography training in underserved regions, including the significance of mentorship, education, and empowerment of radiographers and MR technicians;
• Examine the efforts of RAD-AID in improving medical imaging access across 30 countries, and identify opportunities for ISMRM/ISMRT members to contribute to global public health initiatives through radiology volunteerism; and
• Analyze the comprehensive approach adopted by Imaging the World in democratizing ultrasound services, including technology implementation, training, supervision, and quality management, and understand its implications for enhancing accessibility to radiology services in resource-constrained regions.

Talk 1: Establishing Radiology Residency in Malawi
• Speakers: Karen Chetcuti & Katrina McGinty
• Synopsis: Delve into the journey of creating a radiology residency in Malawi amidst limited MRI access. Discover the pivotal role of partnerships and knowledge exchange between low and high resource settings in overcoming challenges and achieving success.

Talk 2: Training Future Leaders in Radiography
• Speakers:, Sekinat Aderibigbe, Cowles Chilungulo, Shawna Farquharson, Karabo Mokay & Jackline Thairu
• Synopsis: Explore the ISMRT Future Leaders Initiative, aimed at enhancing radiography training in underserved regions. Learn about mentorship, education, and the transformative impact of empowering radiographers and MR technicians globally.

Talk 3: Enhancing Radiology Readiness
• Speaker: Joe Weygand
• Synopsis: Uncover the work of RAD-AID across 30 countries, dedicated to improving medical imaging access in low-resource areas. Discover opportunities for ISMRM/ISMRT members to volunteer and contribute to global public health initiatives through radiology.

Talk 4: Lessons Learned from the Democratization of Ultrasound
• Speaker: Kristen de Stigter
• Synopsis: Learn how by implementing a comprehensive approach encompassing technology, training, supervision, and quality management, Imaging the World has significantly enhanced access to imaging, leading to democratized radiology services. Discover how successful implementation and scalability require addressing not only technological and procedural aspects but also cultural factors.

Panel Discussion / Q&A
The session will continue with a panel discussion where members of the audience can ask questions, and/or contribute their own thoughts to the discussion.

Meet the Speakers
The session will conclude with an opportunity to ‘Meet the Speakers’ informally, at the end of the session, to make connections, and volunteer to get involved.

Summary

By bringing together these diverse perspectives and initiatives, attendees will gain valuable insights into the challenges, solutions, and collaborative opportunities in democratising MRI for maximum impact in low resource settings.
