Session Title
NASA’s Habitable World Observatory
Session Type
Splinters
Room
410 B
Summary
The Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) is a planned NASA flagship astrophysics mission that will search for signs of life on terrestrial planets orbiting nearby stars in their habitable zones, will conduct transformative investigations in other areas of astrophysics. The mission will also be able to produce nearly flyby-quality observations of a number of solar system bodies, characterize the habitability on Ocean Worlds in our Solar System, and make measurements of our solar system in unique regimes of wavelength and time scales. Planning for HWO is underway, and this session will be an opportunity to hear from personnel at NASA Headquarters and the new HWO Project Office about the potential value of HWO for planetary science, and well as discussions of particular science cases from Working Groups already exploring the mission possibilities.

Stefanie Milam – Comets and interstellar objects
John Clarke – Planetary aurorae
Samantha Hasler – Exoplanet/giant planet analog crossover
John Noonan – Comets as probes of giant planet formation
Imke de Pater – All things Io
Richard Cartwright – Habitability of Ocean Worlds
Ben Proudfoot – Small TNOs and TNO binaries
Bryan Holler – Large TNOs and icy dwarf planets
